The renewal of the heritage-listed Dawn Fraser Baths presented a unique challenge: how to bring Australia’s oldest surviving public pool up to today’s standards without compromising its historic character. The project was defined by the tension between old and new – delivering modern safety, compliance, and accessibility within the constraints of a treasured heritage fabric.
DC Partnership provided fire safety engineering, accessibility and inclusive design, and BCA consultancy services. Our fire strategy supported the existing building form while recognising the limitations of heritage construction. Accessibility solutions were guided by the principle of providing equitable and dignified outcomes – where areas could not be made accessible due to heritage constraints, we ensured alternative locations offered inclusive access for all users. The BCA team helped distinguish new works from existing fabric, ensuring compliance requirements were clear, achievable, and sympathetic to the heritage context.
The outcome is a revitalised community icon where modern safety and inclusivity sit in harmony with history.
