Eric Tweedale Stadium in Merrylands is a community sports pavilion for Cumberland City Council, delivering a new building, a grandstand with seating for 760 spectators, an upgraded car park and a new rugby league playing field. Designed by SutersARCH and completed in 2021, its glulam timber roof, with splayed rafters on glulam columns, was designed to blend with the existing tree canopy.
DC Partnership provided Building Code Consultancy, Fire Safety Engineering, and Accessibility & Inclusive Design. Working alongside the design team, DCP helped establish a clear pathway for a timber sports building with large spectator areas, including a fire engineered approach that allows spectators to move from the stands onto the playing field in an emergency, supporting the glulam and CLT structure that gives the stadium its character.
The stadium was named Overall Winner at the Australian Timber Design Awards and received a Commendation for Public Architecture at the NSW Architecture Awards.
A community stadium that celebrates timber, supported by a regulatory strategy built around it.
