A public aquatic centre set into heritage parkland, planned as much like a landscape as a building.

Set into sloping parkland within Parramatta Park, the Parramatta Aquatic Centre was designed by Grimshaw with Andrew Burges Architects for the City of Parramatta and delivered by Lipman. The 14,330 m² centre brings together indoor and outdoor pools, wellness and community spaces, linked by public paths and an elevated circular promenade that let the building read as part of the landscape.

DC Partnership worked with Council as Building Code Consultant while the design was still developing, helping the project team understand how the building code applied to a building that does not follow conventional patterns.

A partly sunken, circular form, large open pool halls and timber on the external walls all called for a considered approach. DCP helped establish where a performance-based pathway could support the design intent, so the architecture could lead.

The centre opened in September 2023 and received the National Award for Public Architecture and the NSW Sulman Medal in 2024.

A public building that sits lightly in its park, with a clear regulatory pathway established early.
